And by "allowed", I mean that they would not face any disciplinary action due to their refusal to sell the product.Should a Christian working at a book store be allowed to refuse to sell The Satanic Bible?
Of course not, just as a Satanist working at a book store should not be allowed to refuse to sell The Holy Bible.
No, it is like any other job. You are required by your employer to sell a product, and if one of these products is offensive to you to the point that you must refuse to sell it, then you should not be working in that outlet. They should be sacked immediately and the job given to somebody who is able to uphold their professional integrity.Should a Christian working at a book store be allowed to refuse to sell The Satanic Bible?
No; I don't think so.
Where I draw the line is an employee being forced to do something that is illegal or that is obviously going to bring harm. If I worked at a store that sold antifreeze and some guy said, "I'm going to poison my neighbor's dogs with this" I'd refuse to sell it to him on ethical, legal and moral grounds.
If I worked in a place where a lot of what we sold was something to which I objected (pornography that glorified violence against women) I would quit.
I think that if that is what the job required, then no. They can always quit.
I am reading these answers with a great amount of interest, especially the ones who say no. Because this is an identical issue to allowing a pharmacist to decline selling birth control pills due to 'religious' objections. I would like to know what the difference is.Should a Christian working at a book store be allowed to refuse to sell The Satanic Bible?
Yes. They don't have to sell the item. To not face disciplinary action is up to the owner of that particular store. I doubt this scenario will work out in the real world, but it could happen. I just imagine the customer going to another sales clerk who will help them.
Fire them.
"I know he can get the job, but can he DO the job?... I didn't say that. No, I didn't say that. If I said that, I would have been wrong. I know he can get the job, but can he DO the job? I'm not arguing that with you, Harry. I'm not arguing that with you."
If they refuse then their employer has the right to fire them.
If they don't want to sell a perfectly legal item then they shouldn't have the job.
If I worked at a gun store and refused to sell guns because it went against my beliefs what would happen.
No because if you work there and you know there could be books like that there, then it is your choice to be employed there or not and just because you believe one thing, doesn't mean that you have the right to special treatment at work.
No, they should not. That is a form of censorship. Since this is the U.S., if someone wants to read something, then he or she has the right to.
If I owned the store they would be allowed to find employment elsewhere.
I would say they don't have that right, any more than pharmacists should have the right to refuse to sell birth control.
I am Christian,I say no you took the job do the job.
No. Just the same way you don't get arrested for being Christian. Its called freedom of religion.
No.
You take the job, you do the job.
NO.
Yes, they should be allowed to refuse. The "I was just following orders" excuse was discredited at Nuremberg.
