In the book pilgrims progress What motivates Christian to leave his wife and children behind?

It's been a long time since I read Pilgrim's Progress, but I believe he left them behind because of his own distress. He felt burdened by his sins and felt damnation and ruin were to be his, and he wanted to know how to be saved. He tried to explain this to his wife and children, but they were hardened to his words. They didn't believe that destruction was coming on them and their city. Then one day, while he was lamenting in the field, he ran into the Evangelist who told him where to go to get saved. Thus, his journey began.

As I said, it has been a while. However, I believe you can find this explanation in the very first chapter.
