The best complete Hans Christian Andersen leather bound book?

I want to buy a leather bound copy of the complete stories by Hans Christian Andersen. I have seen heaps of books out there by different publishers and it gets confusing.

Ive read the reviews on amazon and a few people are saying the paper is super thin, or the ink smudges, or there are no space between the stories, or badly translated.

Can anyone personally recommend one? Or do I go for one that only has part of the storiesThe best complete Hans Christian Andersen leather bound book?

Can anyone recommend a christian based sex education book for kids?

I'm homeschooling my son in 7th grade next year and I am looking for a good christian-based sex education bookCan anyone recommend a christian based sex education book for kids?
if you follow the A Beka curriculum--well i did--there's an elective that teaches on sex education and it's Christian based. i disagree with Jenni because one ought to know that sex is honorable After marriage and one also ought to know about the consequences of unsafe sex.

well, even if you aren't using A Beka, you could buy the book for your child, though i'm pretty sure it's actually for the higher grades... like grades 9-12... maybe check with your present curriculum and see what books they offer for sex education?
He's already in 7th grade and you're just getting around to the facts of lfe?! Chances are, he already knows.

Good luck with that. Can anyone recommend a christian based sex education book for kids?
My son just read _Preparing for Adolescence_ by Dr. James Dobson. He loved it. Dennis and Barbara Rainey also have one titled, _So You Want to be a Teenager?_.
I have no recommendation on "sex" education.

With our sons we focus on character education first.

Some good book choices are:

I just ordered the series by Stan and Brenna Jones, "What's the Big Deal "(ages 8-11) and "Facing the Facts: The Truth About Sex and You" (ages 11-14). This series starts at age 3-5, with the first book "The Story of Me", and has four books to the series. It got great reviews and is definitely Christian based. Gives the facts, and why God designed sex for marriage. My daughter, age 11, and I are starting book 3 now. It is hard to find something on this subject, but this is good.
I'm pretty sure you won't find one. The Christian belief with regards to sex is abstinence until marriage. This creates a pretty small book in and of itself. Not to say they aren't out there, but the ones that are in print are generally chalked full of misinformation that is meant to scare kids into not having sex as opposed to giving them solid, factual information.

What's a good book on Christian angels and demons?

I'm looking for reference material, so I need something scholarly that draws on scripture and doesn't stray too much into conjecture. Light reading is preferable but not necessary. Thanks. What's a good book on Christian angels and demons?
Certainly as a Christian, you would want the Bible as your chief resource, but the truth of the matter is that the Bible is fairly silent on the subject of angels and demons, which implies little importance is placed on the subject.

Excluding the deuterocanonical books, the only angels mentioned by name in the Bible are Michael, Gabriel, Abaddon, and Satan/Apollyon; Lucifer, given his context in Isaiah and Ezekiel, is not an angel, nor is he Satan.

As for a good book about angels and demons, this draws from far more than the Bible, but is diligent in its biblical quotations and is also pretty much the last word in studying angelic entities. It is fascinating, and one of those books you can read cover-to-cover, or at any part in the middle. The book is "A Dictionary of Angels: Including the Fallen Angels" by Gustav Davidson. What's a good book on Christian angels and demons?

This book effectively uses biblical basis for showing how God does indeed have a plan for those who are willing to follow it and have a desire to know it. Smith sets forth consistent guidelines that will change your life. The peace that comes from knowing God is in control is the greatest peace a person can know. Short, powerful chapters provide plenty of room for introspection and will greatly aid both a person in the early stages of their faith or an older Christian.

The best book for Christians of all ages is the Bible. It is probably best, most instructive, most inspiring, etc, to start with the gospels, marking any passages that have meaning for you, or that you like the sound of, etc, either with crayon, or with a highlighter that will not bleed through the page.

The AV [King James' version] has the most beautiful English prose, and has powerful descriptive passages that lead a sincere person to increase their devotion to God, and to become more Christlike.

BTW - there is no book about the Bible that is as good as the Bible itself.

One thing you should learn on this list is not to tempt some of these folks by asking them not to give what you refer to as ignorant answers. They just can't resist.

Seriously though, sit down with the Bible and ask God to open your heart and mind to the truth as it is written in the Holy Scriptures. I believe I read somewhere that the Bible is written on about a sixth or seventh grade level so anyone with the help of God's Holy Spirit can easily learn about this way of life. Jesus lived His human life as an example of the way we should strive to live ours. May God bless your endeavors to learn and live the Truth.

The idea that Jesus is God comes from a misinterpretation of his teachings.

Jesus does say that the father and I are one but this must be taken in the context of his entire teaching.

In the gospel of Luke we read that he said The Kingdom of God is within You.

If we look outside of the bible, in the gospel of Thomas Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the (Father's) kingdom is within you and it is outside you.

It is clear that Jesus saw everything as being a part of God. Jesus himself was not an exception to this rule.

The early catholic church that set up most of the theological dogma simply chose to leave the rest of creation out of the God equation.

Why there is different book arrangement between Christian Old Testament and Jewish Tanakh?

I do wish to have Christian scholars' answers here. However, people of other faiths (especially Jewish) are also invited to kindly share their knowledge. Why there is different book arrangement between Christian Old Testament and Jewish Tanakh?
The Jewish Tanakh is organized according to genres. The Torah, or Law, is first (also known as the Pentateuch). Then the Nebicim, or Prophets. This begins with the former prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel-Kings) and is followed by the latter prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the 12 minor prophets). Finally the Ketubim, or writings (Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentation, Esther, Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah, Chronicles)

A few points of interest: the last chapter of Proverbs, Ruth, and Song of Songs all discuss women (particularly the virtuous woman) and are arranged in that order.

Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentation, and Esther are called the Megillot - each book was associated with a particular Jewish festival.

Several books in the Jewish Tanakh were divided into more books in the Greek-English Old Testament because of the number of scrolls it was written on. For instance, 1 Samuel through 2 Kings was actually one book, but a book that large could not fit on one scroll, so it was divided into four scrolls. This became 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, and 2 Kings in the Greek-English Bible.

The Greek-English translation of the Bible, however, is generally arranged historically.

Personally, I don't believe that either arrangement is at fault or that one is "holier" than the other. However, I do think that the Jewish arrangement does allow the reader to focus more on the literary context of each book than the Christian arrangement does. The Christian Old Testament is often taught with too much emphasis on the historical and little to no emphasis on the literary context.
little not already in my answer, but perhaps you were clearer, or I seemed to add too much. One error - true, 1 Sam - 2 Ki s is not four books, but it's really TWO not one (Samuel, Kings) and is so treated in the Hebrew text

Why there is different book arrangement between Christian Old Testament and Jewish Tanakh?
There was an attempt made to arrange them in some what of a chronological order.

That is we begin with genesis/ creation and we end with revelations which hints of the end. The idea was to give the impression that we had a coherent story with prophecy's that were made and then fulfilled.

This was done to give credibility to the idea that the bible was compiled to promote. The bible as it stands to this day was created by the roman empire to change the message of Jesus to something that the Romans found more acceptable.

This is why it is often difficult to understand.

The message of Jesus on the other hand is elegant and simple to understand. You need to separate the message that Jesus left for us from all of the nonsense that the Romans overlaid it with and it will start to become quite easy to understand.

Don't take my word for any of this. Study biblical history for your self and draw your own conclusions. There are many good books on this subject by some intelligent and thoughtful people. Take advantage of their efforts.

Email if you are interested and I will send some suggested reading material.

    Love and blessings.

    Don
The Jews Orthodox do not agree with the christian world and our bible, they do not accept Jesus Christ as the messiah. Why there is different book arrangement between Christian Old Testament and Jewish Tanakh?
The key to the whole is 'what to do with the "[sacred] Writings" (a catch-all name to begin with).

Ego's description of the order of the Hebrew Bible is pretty good, though his characterization of the third part does not seem entirely adequate.

I would also point out that the "third section" was known when Christianity began.

In fact, the three-part division is reflected in the New Testament. In the gospels we read of the WHOLE 'Old Testament' referred as "the Law" AND as "the Law and Prophets", but ALSO as "The Law, the Prophets and the Psalms" [Luke 24] -- "the Psalms" being a convenient designation for the last part because

    a) it is the most prominent (and widely used --liturgically, for prayers and songs) of these books

    b) it is associated with another of the major Old Testament figures, often cited along with Moses , viz., DAVID

Actually, these two reasons probably explain why it frequently is the FIRST book in "the Writings"

    _____________

The order is not quite as radically altered as may at first appear. And once you see how the books of the "Writings" were re-distributed, it's fairly easy to understand. All the more so when you observe that there CONTINUED to be much variation of the order of the books WITHIN this section in various JEWISH traditions.

In other words, the ONE real difference between the Jewish and Christian orders stems from the issue of 'what to do with this set of books. And the fact that this was never quite settled within JEWISH circles argues AGAINST some deliberate Christian "scheme" to re-arrange the canon for their own purposes.

    _____________

    DETAILS

    1) First, note that MUCH of the order of the major "blocks" is the same or very close.

Thus there is no difference in the internal order of the five books of Moses, the four books that tell the main 'history of the kingdom' [Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings]** and the order of the "latter prophets" (Isaiah - Malachi)

In fact, if you simply leave out the "Writings" --the third section of the Jewish canon-- ALL the rest of the books are in the SAME order in both canons. (see the list at the end)

** I list Samuel and Kings (and later Chronicles) as each ONE book -- literarily they are, and were only split for the sake of more manageable scrolls.

    2) In other words the MAIN difference between the two is caused by decisions in early Greek translations about how to handle the DIVERSE types of books collected in the "Writings".

These ended up being distributed THEMATICALLY, inserted in an historically appropriate place

    ADDED to the history books:

Ruth - placed after Judges (since it is set in the period of the Judges)

Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah (related books) - after the main history section (Judges - Kings), which the historically overlap with and carry

Esther - story from Persian times, placed last

ADDED to the second group of the Prophets (Isaiah - Malachi)

Daniel - after Isa, Jer, Ez, so that the four are in a chronological order

Lamentations, associated with Jeremiah (and the fall of Jerusalem) is inserted after Jeremiah

(Hosea - Malachi was treated in the Hebrew Bible as one unit -- this was maintained in the Greek translation and Christian Bible)

The REST of the "Writings" are then placed in a 'chronological order' according to the main person they are associated with

    Job (ancient patriarch)

    Psalms (David)

Proverbs, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes (Solomon)

[Proverbs --the longest-- is first; Eccl is last as portraying the perspective at the END of his life]

Thus the Greek Bible simply took principles used in the first two major sections subsections of the Hebrew canon, and their subsections, and applied them to the 'remainder'/writings. That is, it used some of the main thematic organization already found, AND moved books into a 'more chronological' sequence within their section.

The underlying order WITHIN several parts of the Hebrew Bible was already fairly chronological --- the Law, 'Former Prophets' [Judges - Kings] and the 'Latter Prophets' when we view them as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, 'Book of the Twelve' (since the last of these [Hosea - Malachi] ENDS much later than the others.. well after the exile.

The only other change is that the four 'poetic' (and 'wisdom literature') section created by redistributing the rest is moved to stand between the two main sections of "prophets" -- the "former prophets" (the history) and the "latter" or "writing" prophets. Note that this causes the MAJOR sections of the canon to now fall in a more chronological order AS SECTIONS

Moses - history from Conquest on -- David %26amp; Solomon -- prophets to Malachi

    3) Note that the JEWISH order of the books in the "Writings" has itself varied considerably -- based on different applications of principles of CHRONOLOGY and LITURGY (use).

One common general order groups them in three 'chunks' (though with variations within each chunk).

In this scheme the three longest books are placed first, but which is first may vary. Of these, most printed editions now begin with the Psalms, which accords with its importance in Jewish thinking and liturgical USE. But not all manuscripts that grouped these three together followed this order; some followed a more 'chronological' scheme and place Job first

The next five books of the "Megilloth" are in different orders in different Jewish communities. Note that the REASON for this grouping is probably LITURGICAL -- based on the Jewish tradition found among the Ashkenazi communities of reading one specific book from each of these during an important religious holiday (feast or fast day).

One places them all in CHRONOLOGICAL order by subject. This is the order found in the Hebrew Bible on my shelf (Biblica Hebraica Stuttgartensia).

Another order follows the order of the feast days in the Jewish calendar with which each is associated in the Ashkenazi tradition, the order you will find in the Jewish Publication Society's edition.

This is the order of the BHS, with a-e indicating the liturgical/JPS order

Ruth (Feast of Weeks [Pentecost]) b

    Song of Songs (Passover) a

Ecclesiastes (Tabernacles [in the fall]) d

    Lamentations (9th of Ab) c

    Esther (Purim) e

But there are other variations even if the Megilloth is handled as one unit, and traditions that re-order the WHOLE of the Writings, such as those that begin with Ruth, followed by the Psalms (probably on the reasoning that Ruth ends by laying out the lineage of DAVID, so acting as a preface to the Psalms of David).

For the many variations within the Writings see the first paragraph of the section "the Talmudic sequence" in this article

Here, if it helps, is the "Greek" order -- with all the parts from the "Writings" in brackets. As you can see, the rest of the books are in the same order as in the Hebrew canon. [Yes, this follows the 'Protestant' order ... as long as this all is, I will not attempt the further question of the position of books of the Apocryhpa in its various forms]

    Genesis - Deuteronomy

    Joshua, Judges {Ruth}

    Samuel, Kings

    {Chronicles, Ezra-Nehemiah, Esther}

    {Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs}

    Isaiah, Jeremiah {Lamentations}

    Ezekiel {Daniel}

    Hosea - Malachi
The sequence of the books is different, but both have essentially identical content.

    Tanakh = Old Testament

Torah = Five books of Moses

Talmud = Commentary of the Rabbies, which is roughtly equivalent to the Jewish version of what Roman Catholics call their Catechism.

The Christian arrangement of the Hebrew Bible is arranged in an order chronological to the birth of Jesus.

The Jewish arrangement of the Hebrew Bible is separated into three sections -- the five books of Moses, the Prophets, and the writings. For Jews, the Bible is the story of our relationship with God and His instructions for how to live our lives here on this earth.

The Christian Bible is a roadmap to the afterlife.

The Christian version of the Tanakh uses, sadly, MIStranslated Hebrew. Those of us who read accurately translated versions of the original scriptures KNOW that the Jewish messianic prophecies have not been fulfilled and that Jesus did not fulfill a single one. Nor is he mentioned anywhere in Jewish scripture.

I have spoken with Christians who HAVE read the translations recommended to them by Jewish friends and Rabbis, for example, and they always get quite a surprise when they discover how much was changed in the Christian versions.
When the Council of Nicaea addressed the issue of which texts would be worthy of study (later considered "canonized texts") they used the Septuagint from the Library of Alexandria Egypt as the Old Testaments...literally "70 books". There was a later Jewish council that revised those texts and removed some. The Catholics aren't the only ones using the Apocrypha. We Orthodox Christians also use them. The Protestant leaders, particularly Martin Luther, didn't like the use of Maccabees to substantiate the doctrine of Purgatory. So he removed the books that he found distasteful. He also edited out entire passages from the books he kept. Others followed suit. It took until the 20th century to sort out the original texts from those in use by Protestant churches for 500 years.
Everyfaith and religion has a different way of looking at life. It is necessary therefore for different types of approaches and ways of expression and order. Goal of each religion is the same. GOOD OF THE PEOPLE. Let us go on, with no hatred towards any one, Gd bless us all, both believers and also nonbelievers.
The oldest surviving more or less complete Christian canon 'codices' open with a substantial collection of older Israelite scriptures. We are speaking here of 3 codices dating from around 400 - 500 AD:

    * Codex Vaticanus

    * Codex Sinaiticus

    * Codex Alexandrinus

These testify to differences in the precise listing and arrangement of the 'ancient scriptures' (Israelite). To the best of our knowledge these first 'uncial' codices had no title pages introducing scriptures of the first or second part. (At least none have survived). This means there is no distinction between older and newer scriptures as in modern Bibles.

Gentile Christians were the first to begin the assembling and publishing of Hebrew scrolls together in large codices in the 2nd century AD. The creators of these codices were not seeking a perfect listing or arrangement but simply to preserve the books then in use in churches so that they would not become discarded (per Gnostic Marcion's view of abandoning older Hebrew scriptures).

These differences in listing and arrangement eventually raised questions at the end of the 4th century AD and involved Jerome (342 - 420 AD) translating the Greek Bible into Latin.
Religious books are canonizations of various texts, arranged by religious scholars, courts, or other authorities over the years.

For Jews, the order is this: First the Torah (T in Tanakh) was assembled from a series of ancient scriptures. Then, the prophets (Neviim is N in Tanakh) was assembled from various sources (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, etc.). Finally, a compendium of scholarly analysis was published. (Ketuvim, K in Tanakh, means writing in Hebrew) The order of the books logically follows the history of the Jewish people and the evolution of their religious thought.

Christianity emerged as a religion after the Torah %26amp; Neviim were published. Christian scholars included these in their Bibles, and added the Gospels (New Testament).

In all cases, the order and interpretation of the text is purposeful to support the primary message of the religion. Even today, minor modifications to these documents are common. However, any change generally leads to a schism within the religious movement, resulting in a new sect.

Try a "Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible".

Its not a commentary like other concordances to the Bible written by the person opinions and views of theologians.

What it is is a break down of every single word in the Bible( sort of like a dictionary) of what words in the original Hebrew and Ancient Greek every single word in the Bible was translated from, and a present day English translation given by experts in the languages. It is a very useful Biblical Research tool. No one who is serious about understanding the scriptures should be without tools of its likeness.

You can get one at any major or Christian book store, but you will likely have to order it, for about 25 to 30 dollars, maybe less. A tool like such is able to increase a person's accurate understandings of the scriptures a many times over.
    Ezekiel 18:20-24

    New International Version (NIV)

20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

21 鈥淏ut if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

24 鈥淏ut if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? An old book explaining where the Bible came from, it's origins I read called, "How Came the Bible?" by Edgar J. Goodspeed

It's a rather small book, about a novel in size. It comes in paperback, but explains the history of the Bible, even why we call it The Bible. I found it extremely helpful concerning how things came together. Not a lot of Christians know about this stuff, and I find it life-changing, especially with so many erroneous ideas these days about who brought it together.

I would like to find some kind of literature on dating as a single mother. I am 20y/o and I have a 1y/o. Her father and I just broke up for good and I want to find a Christian book where I can see what God has to say about my situation. I want to make sure I go in the right direction while dating now that my daughter and her father are to be considered.Looking for Christian book on dating as a single mother.
Hi, God bless you : )

I highly recommend Lady in Waiting, by Jackie Kendall %26amp; Debby Jones. It is a great book that teaches us what we are worth to God, and how important it is to wait for the right man, and even what we should look for in a man. It is for singles, married women, mothers...I recommend it to every woman i know! The neat thing about it (aside from it being Scripture based), is that there is also a study guide and guided journal in the same book. If you decide to buy it, make sure you get the 2005 reprint (the 3-in-1 book). I also recommend "I kissed Dating Goodbye", By Joshua Harris. It is about letting go of the world's veiw of dating and adopting God's plan for us while waiting for the Right person.

I'm reading the book for the second time, so if you decide to buy it and would like someone to discuss it with, please feel free to contact me.

Don't accept any condemnation put on you by people or the enemy. Remember that God loves you! Your daughter is a blessing!
As a christian I would just stay in the Word for strength and wisdom. The Bible will help you more than any other book. Enjoy you independance, and have fun. (but not too much fun) ....wink.Looking for Christian book on dating as a single mother.
WAS YOU MARRIED TO THIS GUY? IF SO THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT THE ONLY REASON WE CAN DIVORCE ONE ANOTHER IS IF ONE COMMITS ADULTERY OR THE OTHER DIES.

3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made[a]them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’[b] 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?[c] 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”

8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,[d] and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”

IF YOU WERE NOT MARRIED IT IS OK TO SEEK COMPANIONSHIP BUT WITH NO SEX. SEX IS SUPOSED TO BE BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN AFTER THEY ARE MARRIED. SO THAT WHEN WE HAVE THESE URGES THAT GOD GAVE US, WE MAY SATISFY EACH OTHER AS HUSBAND AND WIFE. KIDS ARE A BIG RESPONSIBILITY, THEY NEED TO BE RAISED BY A MOM AND A DAD. THE DAD NEEDS TO BUCK UP AND TAKE HIS ROLE IN THE CHILDS LIFE.

In addition to books, I found that there is a dramatization of The Disputation - Nachmanides Debates Before King James of Aragon..use a search engine with those terms and you'll find it..
Here is a good narrative on these particular debates: http://www.jewishhistory.org/
"Rabbi Moses ben Nachman, Nachmanides, was born in Gerona, Spain. He would become the leader of Spanish Jewry. Perhaps the most dramatic event in his life was the Great Debate. It is a watershed in Jewish history.
King James I of Aragon was a very devoted Roman Catholic. In his court was a Jew by the name of Pablo Christiani – whom the Church called Friar Paul – who had converted to Roman Catholicism. He told the king that he was a Hebrew scholar (the king was barely literate) and that he would be able to prove from the Hebrew Bible and Talmud the truth of Christianity and the falsehood of Judaism. Furthermore, he could prove it to the greatest rabbi of the time, Rabbi Moses ben Nachman
The king thought that if he could convince the greatest rabbi of the veracity of Christianity the rest of the Jews would follow and he would have his ticket to heaven, indeed a front row seat.
Not only did he authorize a debate, but in history this debate marked the beginning of a series of debates –lasting some three centuries — in medieval Europe." click the link above to read more
Here is another reference for you. http://www.simpletoremember.com/articles…
The debates were almost always utilized to begin a persecution of a Jewish community and sometimes resulted in charges of Passover blood libels or accusations of bringing the "Black Death" .
And one last link for you. http://www.faqs.org/faqs/judaism/FAQ/09-…
For the lazy who won't go there since this is the most interesting IMHO
..." the disputation between the Ramban
(Nachmanides, not the Rambam) and Pablo Christiani, a Jew from
Provence who became a Karaite and later a convert to Catholicism.
Christiani had King James of Aragon's ear, and was able to convince
the king to host the dispute. It was written up in a polemic by R'
Chaim (Charles) Chavel, for which there is an English translation
published by Shilo (1983), titled "Disputation at Barcelona". It is
also the topic of Rabbi Dr. David Berger's PhD thesis and much of his
book "Jewish-Christain Debate in the High Middle Ages", published by
Aaronson in 1979. Some historical context is provided in from
"Barcelona and Beyond: The Disputation of 1263 and Its Aftermath" by
Robert Chazan, Berkeley: University of California Press (1992).
Lastly, "The Disputation", a play re-enacting the debate, is available
on video from a number of anti-missionary groups. (Try
    [5]http://www.outreachjudaism.org/)
First, the use of "the" is probably incorrect, as there were many such
disputations. They started around 1240 CE, when Nicholas Donin
(another convert) challenged the local Rabbis to defend the Talmud
against challenges of racism and anti-Christianity in the Talmud. They
won the battle but lost the war, they won the dispute but the Talmuds
were burned by the cartload anyway.
Another famous disputation ran for two years. The Tortosa
"disputation" (1413-14), between St. Vincent Ferrer and the apostate
Geronimo and the local Jewish leaders. In this disputation, they let
the Jews defend the gemara, but not attack Christianity. When the
French Jewish community fled in the 1300s, and the Spanish and
Portugese were force out in the 1490s, the trend of disputations
    ended
The dispute at Barcelona was near unique in that it let both sides
have equal say. The key topics were Christianity, the Jewish
definition of messiah, and proving the messiah hadn't yet come.
Nachmanides relied heavily on logic, rather than purely citing
sources. Again, Nachmanides won the battle, but lost the war--he had
to flee Spain.JEWS %26amp; the MIDDLE AGES - What would be a good book about the Jewish-Christian debates of the middle ages?

do not confuse him with so many religion thoughts, just leave him alone as he grows up he will decided which will be true religion. just to satisfy your hidden Buddhism ghost dont push it up on the child

    Hello,

Here are a few I've found - I haven't read them yet but am planning on buying a few of them:

Disciplines of a godly woman, by Barbara Hughes

The excellent wife, by Martha Peace

    Creative Counterpart, by Linda Dillow

A wife after God's own heart, by Elizabeth George.

    Hope that helps!
    Being a good christian wife?

Well, I don't think you can learn that from a book. If you love your husband, you're a good wife, if you love God you are a good christian. I think that's all.

You should love yourself as well, and stop fretting.I am looking for a book about being a good Christian wife?
You dont need a book, follow your heart ..................
Then you're gona have a hard time finding one.I am looking for a book about being a good Christian wife?
shouldnt you just be a good wife? just love your husband and you'll be a good wife.

Check out The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian or The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. They both come in the Christian section of major bookstores.

Looking for a book analyzing the downfall of American culture since leaving its Christian roots?

I heard about this book from one of my parents, and can't seem to find it anywhere. The book is by a Muslim author who analyzed the decay of America and its moral values since moving away from its Christian roots. I just heard about the book in the last 7 or 8 months, so I believe it is fairly new.Looking for a book analyzing the downfall of American culture since leaving its Christian roots?
I don't know, but since America's founding fathers were deist, not Christian, I can't imagine such a book would be particularly accurate.

Does anyone know why a christian book writer said that these times are the?

Well it could be based on the unprecedented rate of change in electronics technology, and the subsequent access to information and communication the like of which the world has never seen...

Or it could be based on the expectation that the rapture and Jesus' return are about to happen.

  • Book reviews from a Christian perspective?

Is there a website for reviews of books from a Christian perspective? I have teenagers that love to read but I cannot and do not want to read all the books that they want to so I need a way of ensuring that the books are appropriate.Book reviews from a Christian perspective?
Some people say just to read YA books, but many of those are worse then adult books.

So how about you trust them to know whether they should be reading something or not?

Just be happy that they're reading. Do you really want them to just watch TV and movies because you know the rating system?

ADD: If you trusted them then you'd trust that if they encountered something inappropriate in a book they wouldn't read it anymore. Besides, books don't have images in them. It's not like they are going to accidentally run across porn.

If you are sending your teens to a public high school they are probably going to read books you would find inappropriate anyway in their english/lit. class. In fact, some of the books I read in school were drastically worse then anything I've ever read of my own accord.

Book reviews from a Christian perspective?
They're teenagers. They're old enough to begin to make their own decisions and conclusions. Censoriing their reading material isn't the answer. Have them discuss what they're reading with you so you can help them put it in perspective. If you tell them not to read certain books now, those will be the first they read when they're 18 and away from home. It's better if they begin to be introduced to more controversial literature now while you're there to discuss it with them.
You'd have to define "Christian Perspective" as there are many varieties and flavors of Christianity, ranging from the supertolerant "If you can't say anything good about something, keep your mouth shut" to the Paranoid Fundie Book Burning "my faith is so fragile I can't read a book that doesn't overtly support it" nutjobs.

Sadly, most of the "Christian Book Review" sites I've seen are run by folks trending towards the latter.Book reviews from a Christian perspective?

What good Christian book should I give to a Biochemistry scientist who is atheist, for his 86th birthday?

Are you trying to convert him or insult him, or just get him something good to read?

    Either way,

    C.S. Lewis- Mere Christianity

    or

    The Screwtape Letters (same author)

They both carry nice intelligent Christian undertones, and the second makes a great read. A nice way to start opening closed minds, if thats what you're attempting. What good Christian book should I give to a Biochemistry scientist who is atheist, for his 86th birthday?
That's not a very respectful gift. What would you think of someone giving a Christian an atheistic book as a birthday present?

If you're really serious about this, you could get him a copy of the Skeptic's Annotated Bible. He'd probably enjoy that. (It's not available in print, but can be purchased on CD.)
Hi, there is a book called Answers in Genesis written by John Mackay and Ken Ham (both Christians and scientists), that looks at the Bible form a scientific point of view. They have also written similar books on biology, archaeology and astrophysics. These books are brilliant and are not insulting to the more scientifically educated mind.

Here is a link from wikipedia that gives you more information on this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Answers_in_…What good Christian book should I give to a Biochemistry scientist who is atheist, for his 86th birthday?
I'm a Christian, but I have to say:

You shouldn't. He's intelligent enough to decide for himself what he believes, and he has had plenty of time to do so.

To give him a Christian book when he hasn't asked for one is somewhat judgmental, in my opinion.

Get the man a nice bottle of Scotch (I suggest The Glenlivet) and celebrate his life with him.
Unless he has specifically asked for a text to study or look at, it would be a grave insult to him to give it to him. Instead why don't you try going to arborday.org and ordering a tree to be planted in a national forest in honor of his birthday. It is a wonderful way to not only help the Earth but show a respect to his belief system. That is if you really want to honor his birthday and not fling it in his face....What good Christian book should I give to a Biochemistry scientist who is atheist, for his 86th birthday?
If this is a gag gift, get him any book being hawked by televangelists. The more famous and insane the televangelist, the better.

But if you're serious about thinking it will convert him, don't do it. If you want a good themed book that won't offend him and all of that, get him a copy of "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett. It's a riot.
Jehovah's Witnesses have a wonderful book called Evolution or Creation that might make a good arguement for the side of God but perhaps he wouldn't even read it. Either way, it is free of charge, but you can make a small donation to further the preaching of God's Kingdom throughout the earth, if you wish.
Some of these answers are ridiculous. Anything by Ken Ham %26amp; Co. he will see through in a second as the nonsense they are. Anyone with half a scientific education can see through the Jehovah's Witness "Creation or Evolution" book straight away. It was that book that first made me realise the fact that creationists were deliberately lying, it lies from the first paragraph on.

"The Screwtape Letters" by Lewis has the advantage of being amusing but my father is 85, no scientific education at all, and he's read it, so have I, and I'd guess your friend might have too. It was well known in the 1950s.

If you have to give something with a religious theme, avoid the moronic stuff. Fr. Teilhard de Chardin wasn't a moron, but his stuff has been dismissed by scientists and disavowed by his church. Maybe something really classic like the "Confessions of St Augustine."
Anything by Strobel should be good for a laugh. I assume this is a gag gift. When I read "Case for a Creator" I laughed quite a bit as he interviewed non-experts in any meaningful field of the areas he was discussing, and failed to talk with actual experts in those fields.
Evidence demands a verdict by Josh McDowell a past athiest who tried to disprove the bible and became a believer

    from the bible book store,

for you to read first it is short and deals with Messianic prophecy "The Promise" by Hal Linsey

let him know you would like to trade books back with him in a month

and here is something to copy too

    They follow the Jewish Religion.

Worshiping is Messianic Jewish (from the Greek for the anointed one Cristos/ Hebrew is Moshiach, not the other so called Judaism that has replaced Moses' rule for a blood atonement for sins Leviticus 17:11 claiming there are other ways to atone for sins, while in each of those given the giver also sacrificed the blood atonement too. These 'Jewish' reject Isaiah's fulfillment to the new coventant (Jeremiah 31:31) "He shall be exaulted but first marred more than any man, and he will be REJECTED, and lay down his life to make atonement for our sins." Isaiah 52:13-53:12

The non Messianic Jewish many claim that it is Israel that died innocent for its sins= total willful blindness.

Isaiah 9:6 shows why the Messiah is to be worshipped and on earth received worship too "Unto us a child is born, a son is given, he is mighty GOD, wonderful in counsel, and the prince of peace.

then we have others with only one requirement that they reject the Messianic Jew and the Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures and they are accepted even

athiest Jews, Reformed Jews that say there is no Messiah and they will be the Messianic age, or the orthodox Jewish some of whom believe Rabbi Schneerson was/is the Messiah.

PREACHES BELIEVING IN THE MESSIAH=TOTALLY JEWISH. Jonah preached to the gentiles in Ninevah to repent of sins and believe in God too. Why would other than Messianic Jews teach about what they reject? but the orthodox have preached that Rabbi Schneerson is the Messiah, yet so wrong. He wasnt even born in Bethelhem, but in Europe.

Bethelem though you are small from you will come the one from eternity."

Hell? Daniel 12:2 teaches there is the place of everlasting abhorance for unbelievers.

Awareness Campaigns, what is wrong with helping others to be aware that they can become truely Jewish, or to teach gentiles they can come to the Jewish Messiah too.

Moshe Rosen is the founder and is born raised and lives as a true Messianic Jew.

Israel is allied with numbers of evangelical churches too.

    c) this is the true religion of Judaism

    Shalom and good question too,

David in Messiah my good Shepherd Psalm 23/John 10 and best friend, I wont give you that verse again, ok I will just in case you forgot the words of love from the Jewish Messiah spoken from heaven; Revelation 1:1, %26amp; 3:19%26amp;20 knocking on our heart door to come in forgive sins and be our personal Messiah and best friend.

2- The language of God is (I've heard) a very good book that explains how science and Christianity can go together...

  • Atheists, have you ever suggested that a christian read a book that you felt strongly should convince them?

that believing in God is silly and the absurdity of religion. Only to have have them read the book and still remain a christian. Why do you think they didn't get the same out it as you did? What book did you suggest to them. What was their review of it?

Christians, has this happened to you. What book did an atheist suggest. After you read it why were you not convinced.Atheists, have you ever suggested that a christian read a book that you felt strongly should convince them?
No. *I've* never read a book attempting to persuade people to become atheist, so I couldn't recommend one to anyone else.
No, I haven't. I don't push my book on them and I don't like them pushing their book on me.Atheists, have you ever suggested that a christian read a book that you felt strongly should convince them?
Typically I will suggest books or websites that address specific beliefs, not the existence of god in itself. Whether they read it, and whether it leads them to reevaluate their belief in gods, is up to them.
I never read a book nor do I know if any exist. I simply sat back and thought everything out logically and came to the conclusion that there can not possibly be a god. I'll carry that conclusion to my grave. If a Christian ever sat down and really thought about the absurdities and contradictions of religion he'd be an Atheist too.Atheists, have you ever suggested that a christian read a book that you felt strongly should convince them?
No I have never felt the need to try and influence anybody in any aspect of religion. Each to their own.
No, I have never done that. If their beliefs weren't reached by evidence and reason, then no amount of evidence and reason will change their minds.

They've recommended books to me and I've read them all. They are easily refuted. Anybody who has changed their minds on the basis of men like Lee Strobel is a first-class imbecile.
    no

dont know why i would do that unless they asked me for a suggestion of any book of this description

Is there anyone looking to publish a Christian or Inspirational book?

I've seen a lot of post with people writing fiction and fantasy what about Christian material? Is there anyone looking to publish a Christian or Inspirational book?
Yes. Harlequin has a division that does strictly inspirational romances called Love Inspired. They have several lines including contemporary, historical, and suspense with an overall inspirational theme. Also, a friend of mine recently sold her inspirational novel to Barbour press. I'm sure there are other publishers and a search on Amazon for inspirational novels will probably help you find them.Is there anyone looking to publish a Christian or Inspirational book?

the book of Job, its all about a guy who loses everything and how he deals with it....no need to look any farther than the bibleDoes anyone know a good Christian authored book about depression?
Happiness is a Choice by Minirith / Meier

~Dr. B.~Does anyone know a good Christian authored book about depression?
"Darkness is my only companion is a good book" and "When it hurts to live" are both good books. You can find them at...

    http://www.amazon.com/Darkness-My-Only-Companion-Christian/dp/1587431750

    http://www.amazon.com/When-Hurts-Live-Devotions-Difficult/dp/0873032330/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8%26amp;s=books%26amp;qid=1268346715%26amp;sr=8-2
If you're really interested in depression, which can have neurophysiological or psychological causes, you should read books that deal with the problem from a physical and a psychological standpoint rather than theological ideas that charlatans have about it. Mental illness and theology have nothing to do with eachother except insofar as theology itself causes it or amplifies a pre-existing illness.

What's the Title of this Christian Kids Book?

I did a little search but nothing showed up pertaining to books around that time. Have a look see through ebay as many people list older publications that have often been packed away. At least that way you will know if you come across it by the pic, also second hand stores always have a good supply of bibles and books. Have you asked a family member if they remember more about it? I found one of my old ones "book of bible stories" by the arch bishop of canterbury not so long ago. I love collecting different old bibles and I even have my Good news from when I was a child. Sadly I was in excellent condition from lack of use but when I got older and dedicated my life I have since warn through 1 thoroughly and a few others are getting tatty. You can tell a christian by his bible right!

I actually use one for my kids from the Watchtower society ~ JW's. Next time they knock on your door or you can get one from their website completely free. It is completely based on the bible and paraphrased into easy to read language for kids and beautiful illustrations. You can have a look at it online and if you want one just hit the contact button and ask for one. They don't charge for any of their literature. I have 7 kids and they have used these ones and love them.

Interesting question, because I'm in a similar predicament, although my book is a crime novel that is a long way from being Christian (although I wouldn't complain if Christian bookstores wanted to stock it.)

You've had some good answers, so I won't repeat what everybody else has said. What I would add is that you cannot over-estimate the power of a signed book; the prescence of your signature on the jacket can make the difference between somebody buying or passing, and every book sold is hopefully one more reader telling their friends and neighbours about this great new book they have discovered.

Go to as many events as you can. Approach bookshops and distributors directly; be pushy but polite. I'm doing a signing in Borders this weekend which I would never have got if I hadn't approached them directly.

If there are any special groups to which your book makes you eligible to join, then do it- I'm a member of the CWA, which means that I get to sit at the same table as other, much more successful writers. I slipped a copy of my novel to a very high profile author the other day; hopefully she'll read it and recommend it.

At the very least, shamelessly plug your book at every opportunity, and give people a reason to buy it. For example, my novel is called The Stone Gallows, and my publisher is so confident that it's a good book that they are putting it forward for several major awards.

See what I did there? I managed to work MY book into YOUR answer.

    Anyhoo, best of luck.
You need to realize that the internet isn't magic. Sure set up the website and make sure you're on amazon. If the book eventually takes off, this will be valuable.

Nobody is just going to find your book by accident on the net. It is big and your book costs money. So nobody is just going to go "great yet another unknown children's book i could buy"

You need to work the christian book stores to stock your book, unlike real book stores they are still have a bit more leeway for independents. You could also set up a table at the regular Christian events that welcome vendors. Sell it as a "Meet the Author" type of deal and sign the books for free. The more book store owners you meet, the more that might stock it.How can I promote my christian childrens book online?
Creating your own website is a good idea, and making sure your book is stocked at internet book shops such as Amazon.

You should also seek out the appropriate Christian book shops in your area and ask them about stocking your book, maybe you could do a signing.
Try spamming internet question and answer forums? ;)

More seriously, set up your own website specifically for the book. Next, contact Christian websites and see if they will let you advertise your book on their website or in their newsletter. How can I promote my christian childrens book online?
*Make a website for the book ( on Freewebs or Piczo to make a free website )

*Create a group for the book on social networking sites like Facebook

What is the title of this thought to be christian book?

my memory is vague because i read it several years ago. but it had something to do with a young man and there is another guy planting bombs all over the city. the young man keeps being reminded of his past i think. the title i THOUGHT was either ''Three'' or ''III' because on the cover it just had three large lines. help please!!What is the title of this thought to be christian book?
That's "Three" by Ted Dekker! That is a GREAT book! It was the book that got me into reading Dekker's novels. Almost all of them are fantastic. But the one you are describing is called "Three", it's sometimes written, "Thr3e".

    I hope this helps.

P.S. Ted Dekker is, in fact, a Christian author. However, he doesn't write like one. He keeps his books clean, and have a good moral message that makes you think but he doesn't shove religion down people's throats. His newer books are very dark, and wont even be sold in Christian bookstores because they're so gruesome. But they're all VERY good.

The brio girls books are great, they give christian perspective to a lot of the issues you face in school and life. The only issue is that they are about girls in high school. I still think they are good (I read them in middle school). It says that the books are for girls 12-16, so that should be perfect.

I would suggest that you do a internet search on Christian Fiction. Google lists authors, books, publishers, etc... any of these will take you to a bunch. Amazon also has a Christian Fiction section...
I echo Gilbert Morris' series The House of Winslow. It's very lengthy, but excellent. The first in the series is called The Honorable Imposter. This series begins in the 1600s (I think I'm remembering correctly) and follows the family all the way into the present. (Some others: 2-The Captive Bride, 3-The Indentured Heart, 4-The Gentle Rebel, 5-The Saintly Buccaneer, etc.)

I would also suggest Jane Peart's series The Brides of Montclair. This is also a lengthy series, but it is excellent and follows the family from colonial times in Williamsburg, VA to the present day. The first book in the series is The Valiant Bride. Some other titles include: 2-The Ransomed Bride, 3-Fortune's Bride, 4-Folly's Bride, 5-Yankee Bride/Rebel Bride, etc.

The next author I would recommend is Lawanna Blackwell. She has a great series called The Gresham Chronicles (1-The Widow of Larkspur Inn, 2-The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter, 3-The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark).

There is also Janette Oke who wrote the Love series (among many others): Love Comes Softly, Love's Enduring Promise, Love's Long Journey, Love's Abiding Joy. (They have made these into movies that have aired on Hallmark channel.)

Some other authors I would suggest are Eugenia Price, Robin Lee Hatcher, Karen Kingsbury, Laura Jensen Walker, Tamara Leigh, Melody Carlson, Neta Jackson and others. A good place to check for more authors/novels is http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/B鈥?/a> - which allows you to check by fiction and then narrow it down by contemporary, fantasy, historical, etc.

I enjoy the books by Frank Peretti (The Oath, The Cooper Kids Adventure series, The Veritas Project books, This Present Darkness, Piercing the Darkness), but they are very different than Deborah Bedford's books (more like spiritual thrillers).
So many good books out there. I certainly recommend Karen Kingsbury - Redemption Series, Firstborn Series and Sunrise Series are my faves and if you read in that order there are twelve books with a continuing story though focusing on different characters. There are still two more books in the Sunrise series to be released so it will be 14 between the 3 series when she is done.

Karen Ball is good suspense, romance, etc. Family Honor series book 3 What Lies Within is good.

Michael Phillips has some great historicals out there, my favorite is the Secret of the Rose series and his American history series Shenandoah Sisters and Carolina Cousins.

Beverly Lewis books all set in Amish areas are good too.

And last but not least one of the newest additions to my favorites list is Time Masters Book One: The Call by Geralyn Beauchamp.

You'll find info about some of these books and authors on my blog at http://forstrose.blogspot.com Many of the authors or books would be available through Christianbook.com or local Christian Bookstores in the US. Geralyn's book is on Barnes and Noble.com, Amazon.com and through the publishers site coldtreepress.com

Hope this helps - I tried to include a variety as you didn't specify your genre or type of book you are looking for outside the broad category of fiction and Christian.
If you like Deborah Bedford you will also like Robin Lee Hatcher and Francine Rivers...

However, it really depends on what type of fiction read you are after - The following sub-genre's (if there is such a word) in Christian fiction have great authors:

Christian Sci-Fi: Bill Myers - Soul Tracker, The Presence, Eli

Warfare/Horror: Frank Peretti - This Present Darkness, The Visitation, House also

Chantay James- Valley of Decisions (this book is great for a quick read and has strong women characters)

End times/Prophecy - Left Behind Series (Tim Lahaye)

Witty Small Town: The Midford Series

The Joshua stories by Joseph Girzone are awesome!
